Cake international: Arts Event

On the 6 of April 2019, I went to the cake international event in Excel London, in the form of cake decorating. There were many different activities and displays going on including workshops one of which I attended, where I made a frog out of fondant. As you walked around there were many stands which were selling different cake decorating products and some of which were doing demonstrations. One of the highlights was meeting professional cake decorator Molly Robbins, who was my bronze arts inspiration, and who I have loved watching on extreme cake makers. There was also a stage where you could watch different professionals do demonstrations of different techniques. I watched a demonstration of a lady using edible paint to create lettering. There were also various cake competitions for different areas of the art, which were displayed so you could walk round and see all the entries. I had never seen an event like this before.

I thought that the displays and workshops were very good and helped me learn a lot about the art and new skills within it. The workshops provided the materials and you didn’t need any experience which made the workshop very accessible and more fun as it could be enjoyed by everyone. It was a step by step tutorial with a demonstration by the workshop leader at the pace of everyone in the workshop. There were also pictures and made-before models around the room to look at.  I think the event could have been improved if there were more cakes made by professionals on display to look at and if there was more room for people to watch displays and demonstrations, however overall I thought it was a great experience and I would recommend it. I would recommend it because it is enjoyable no matter how much experience or how much you know about sugar craft as you learn lots there, from the very basics, and the workshops don’t need any experience for. It is a good event to learn lots about cake decorating, even hearing from professionals themselves. From this event I learnt how to make fondant animals, how to make ganache and how do lettering on cakes.
