‘We For India: Saving Lives’ will be livestreamed on Facebook to raise money for Covid relief efforts in India.
Organised by social impact enterprise The World We Want, the performances will be streamed from London and Mumbai.
The 3-hour event on 15 August will be hosted by Rajkummar Rao, star of the Oscar nominated film The White Tiger, while the performers include musical giants such as Ed Sheeran, Annie Lennox and Nile Rodgers. They will be joined by Bollywood stars and over 80 Indian performers.
The money raised from the event will be distributed to the fundraising website Give India and will be utilised to provide medicines and ventilators, staff vaccination centres and support bereaved and impoverished families with meal kits.
India has seen over 30m cases of coronavirus since the pandemic began and almost 430,000 deaths. Many people have turned to crowdfunding to pay steep medical bills as hospital admissions rose rapidly in recent months during a deadly second wave in the country. India’s government has promised to vaccinate the entire adult population by the end of 2021, but there are questions around whether their vaccine stocks are sufficient enough to reach this target.
