Ezio

I originally went to see Ezio in concert in 2015. I really enjoyed the concert and so when Ezio came to Cambridge as part of his tour again 3 years later, I made sure I bought tickets for his next concert at the Cambridge Junction on 15th Dec 2018.

Ezio

Ezio is a folk music band from Cambridge, England formed in 1990. Ezio have eight studio albums, one compilation album, four live albums and three videos. Ezio Lunedei is the lead singer and main songwriter and plays acoustic guitar, Mark "Booga" Fowell plays guitar, Lidia Cascarino plays bass, "The Reverend" Lee Russell plays percussion, steel guitar and a variety of other instruments, and Alex Reeves plays the drums. The band vary their touring routine depending on the venue - some gigs will feature all five members in the line-up, whereas some gigs in smaller venues like the one I went to at the Cambridge Junction had just Ezio and Booga.

Ezio performed with his friend Booga again this time.  I really loved how he made the concert entertaining through humour and by telling stories in between the songs.  I like the music which was similar to the last concert and he repeated a lot of the songs.  I enjoyed watching them live compared to listening to their recordings.  I bought a CD at the concert and enjoyed listening to it afterwards.

Ezio is a folk band mainly but also dabbles in the rock and roll genre.  His childhood seems to have greatly influenced his compositions. He grew up in Cambridgeshire and this was evident from his song ‘Saxon Street’ which is based on his childhood in Cambridge.  The lyrics go:

We used to play on Saxon Street

Outside Gino's after school

That's where we'd meet

Wearing black boots on Latin feet.

I went to another of Ezio’s concerts previously on 12/12/2015.

I went to this event because I wanted to see a local artist perform and Ezio is a high calibre guitarist, just like I aspire to be.

I enjoyed listening to this song he shared on Christmas day 2020 and perhaps you will too, have a look here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?fbclid=IwAR0Nj8ZOQpquKgeZLTcfZTqpsjWk3EQEGIz8g78akUmhfy8WjOF_kwbbYsA&v=EHakD1Sek6s&feature=youtu.be

All his lyrics are very clever like the song ‘Bruce Springsteen’ which is about his girlfriend who was a fan of the boss. The lyrics go:

I'll never be the boss just lower management I guess

I've never had a Thunderbird

A beat up Volvo is less absurd

I'd do anything to impress you

I'd do anything to caress you

I grew up in a town called Whittlesey

I've never been to New Jersey

I don't know too much about you

But your friend said you like Bruce Springsteen

It was a standing venue.  However, the inexpensive tickets made a fantastic guitarist accessible to me.  So there were pros and cons.

However, I had grown taller since their last concert, so it was easier to see them this time!  In addition, I managed to get a space in the centre, so I had a half decent view.   However, there was a tall man right in front of me who kept moving around which was quite annoying.

The other negative thing I’d say is that standing in cramped conditions for so long resulted in both me and my Dad who accompanied me getting foot cramps at the end of the performance.

I enjoyed the support act - Max Bianco.  He is a rock musician and has a band called the Blue Hearts who didn’t perform with him on that occasion. He played some original songs of his from his EP Max Bianco and the Blue Hearts.  That was his only album at the time.  Now he has released a live album and an album called Harlot Moon which has North East Bay on which he performed as his last song in the concert I went to.

Ezio performed with his friend Booga again.  I really loved how he made the concert entertaining through humour and by telling stories in between the songs.  I like the music which was similar to the last concert and he repeated a lot of the songs.  I enjoyed watching them live compared to listening to their recordings.

Although they played a wide range of their songs, the one that stands out most in my mind is Saxon Street because I know where that is in Cambridge and also because of the melody.

They have a unique compositional style and are one of the best folk and rock bands that I know.

They are planning to play in Cambridge next on 11th Dec 2021 and I hope that the Covid lockdown regulations will have eased by then as I certainly hope to see them again.   You can buy tickets here: https://www.junction.co.uk/ezio#tickets

This is a very well written review; it seems like your a big fan of Ezio & a regular attendee of his concerts! I may try & catch his winter 2021 concert in Cambridge (if it goes ahead).

Nice to hear about the support act Max Bianco. Sounds like an odd mix of genres they play.

How wonderful to hear about a local band that is as prolific as they have been in their career. "Eight studio albums, one compilation album, four live albums and three videos." That is quite the accomplishment! Plus, the fact that you heard them three years ago and were able to still see them in concert in 2018 - with another concert coming up in 2021. Wonderfully devoted fans like yourself that keep them going. It was interesting to hear how his songs are inspired from his childhood and how he likes to entertain the crowd with stories. I'm glad he is an inspiration to you! I would recommend that you revise the last portion of your review. You have some repeating thoughts from earlier in the article. A word processing error more than a writing error (I would suspect)!

Sounds like a very entertaining evening. The fact that tickets were affordable and accessible is wonderful for the continuation of the vibrant live music scene locaIly. I hope that you are able to get to the next one in December.

Must have been a nice evening – you enjoyed it three times in your review 😊
So now you a role model as guitar player just around the corner. But probably, the abilities on the guitar are important but it would not be sufficient without stage presence and meanings in the songs.
