Wolf Alice in concert

On 20/12/18 I went to the O2 Academy in London to see Wolf Alice,  we were lucky to get tickets as they sell out quickly.    But I was keen as I had missed their previous tour in 2016 as I was in India.

What happened at the arts event?

Ellie Rowsel, Joff Oddie, Theo Ellis and Joel Amy are collectively known as Wolf Alice and have been performing for about a decade now and were nominated in 2016 for a Grammy and a Brit award.  The audience was all quite young and a huge cheer went out as Wolf Alice took the stage. They all put everything into their performance and I loved the sound they created. They sang some of the songs I was looking forward to like - Lisbon, Freazy, Space and Time, and After the Zero Hour.

Describe what art forms were involved: include information about any genres and techniques involved.

It is difficult to box them into a single genre as they have multiple musical styles and influences. They have been described as rocky pop, indie rock, folk, grunge, folk-tinged pop, shoegazing and rock but they are definitely loud.

Have you seen or done something like this before? What was similar to things you’ve seen or done in the past?

Although I had been to see Dodie a few months earlier, Dodie tends to write indie folk which is vastly different to the rock style of Wolf Alice.

What did you think was good and why?

Wolf Alice's diverse range of musical and cultural influences leads to a musical style that appeals to me.  In addition, they were great live performers - putting energy into a technically excellent set.  I made sure to tell my brother about them as he loves playing the guitar and I think he would be inspired by Jeff Oddie the lead guitarist and Theo Ellis the bass guitarist.

How did these experiences influence your own arts practice and/or plans and how much you develop your arts practice in the future?

Although I enjoy listening to the music and I find it relaxing to listen to various different genres which keeps up my interest levels, I don’t think I will be pursuing composing in this genre as my strengths lie elsewhere, however it has encouraged me to start composing for guitar more often.

This was just after they won the Mercury prize - clearly a well regarded band. Good review.

It's a good sign if you can enjoy music without the desire to do something similar. Maybe part of Wolf Alice's music will sneak into your style (and you don't even notice)?
