Going to gigs can be a bit scary, particularly if you're attending alone. Sometimes friends aren't available to come with you or they're just not into the same music, so getting comfortable going alone will open up a world of opportunity in loads of different aspects in your life. I've been to a fair few gigs on my own now, I still prefer being with someone else but I try not to let it stop me from attending things solo. Here are some of my best tips for going it alone!
Start off by getting a drink
Getting a drink first is a good way to ease yourself in. It's probably a familiar interaction for you so it's a light task that enables you to feel more at home in the venue. Also this means you'll be able to focus on the action of sipping your drink if you're feeling slightly overwhelmed or nervous.
Remember no one cares!
When you first attend something solo it's super easy to get wrapped up in your own head and think that everyone is staring at you but the truth is no one cares! Everyone comes to have a good time and they are definitely more consumed by their night out then yours. Try and remind yourself that you deserve to be there and to have a good time regardless.
Get there early or later depending on what will make you feel more at ease
Does getting there early and checking out the venue before it gets full make you less anxious? Or would you prefer to slip into the crowd just before the gig? Deciding which option would work best for you will hopefully help put your mind at rest because you'll know a little bit about what to expect.
Make conversation with others (if you feel you want to)
Talking to people at the bar or in the queue is a great way to immediately feel a little less anxious and also a great way to make new friends. You may even go on to stay in contact with them and attend future gigse together! If you feel this is a little too much for you that's totally fine, you can always stand using your phone if you don't want to be disturbed.
It's okay to stand away or outside if it gets too much
It's totally acceptable to stand nearer the edge of the crowd if you're feeling uncomfortable, I promise no one is judging you for being there! Don't be afraid to step out to the bar or outside the main hall if you feel you need to take a breather, you can always rejoin when you feel ready!
It takes time!
It takes time to feel comfortable on your own, one bad experience can turn into a hundred amazing ones! Don't expect to feel confident straight away just trust in the process and eventually you'll forget you came on your own in the first place!
