The musical retelling of the classic comedic tale of a mother, daughter and her secret mission to find her father, set on an idyllic Greek island. Using ABBA’s timeless pop masterpieces, it tells the story of the to-be bride, Sophie, who invites three men to her wedding to try and uncover which one of them is her father. It is extremely funny, and makes you want to get up, dance and sing on stage along with the performers.
The intended audience is anyone from young to old. The only thing which would ever so slightly prevent someone from seeing the performance is the level of understanding they would have for the storyline, but in my opinion, even just coming to the show for the atmosphere and feel-good music would be worth it.
The costumes in this show gave the audience an immediate serotonin boost, with a bright, summery palette, perfectly mirroring the excitement and happiness of the show. Due to this, it enhanced the emotions of the sadder, more reflective scenes and songs. The use of lighting in this show told the audience what mood the characters had, for example in the dance scene representing the hen-do of Sophie, the lighting was such of a club or disco, whereas when Sophie is posting her wedding invitations to her possible fathers, the dim blue light gave a more muted, secretive feel.
