Divorced, beheaded, LIVE!

A review of SIX, by Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow

Divorced, beheaded, LIVE!

This is a smash-hit musical based on the story of Henry VIII’s six wives. Marlow and Moss took on the challenge of authoring their stories through the queens’ own points of view. It's based round a “competition” the queens have over who had the worst life but is extremely funny and surprisingly factual. Each queen has her own song, in which to convince the audience that she had the most horrific time, but as the show goes on, they decide to stop arguing and start to celebrate their own lives, away from their husband.

Due to the sex references and implied rude language at points, I think this show is suitable for teenagers and above, although it may go over a younger child’s head, so can be okay for a slightly younger teenager.

Throughout the show, there is just one set, no complicated scene changes, which is laid out similar to a music concert would be. The all-women band surrounding the edge of the stage nearer the back, on a raised platform, and the six queens moving round centre stage, only leaving for slight costume changes.

The costumes are extremely well thought through, each queen having  a signature colour, along with black, with a copious amount of rhinestones. The costume designer, Gabriella Slade, used inspiration from history and pop icons such as Beyonce and Britney Spears to perfectly represent each queen’s own personality through their designs. For example, Anne Bolyen’s green checkered mini skirt and top is a nod to the poem ‘Greensleeves’ written by Henry VIII himself. She is also adorned with a choker with the letter ‘B’ upon it, signifying her tragic fate of her eventual beheading.

I really enjoyed this event as it provided an interesting, comedic storyline as well as having a splash of underlying historical significance and facts. The music and dialogue was catchy, and perfect for a feel-good musical.
