Titus Andronicus is not a play I have ever seen before and I did not know the storyline well. I was pleased to see how easy this version made it to understand the story and have come out of the performance feeling considerably more confident on the events of the play as well as the storyline as a whole.
I don't feel like I have just watched a Shakespeare play, which many people my age would say is the best possible outcome, but having grown up seeing many traditional ones, I'm slightly disappointed. I think this version is perfect for children who haven't studied any Shakespeare or simply don't understand it, but for me, I think it made me forget that I was watching a Shakespeare play at all.
Having said that, I really enjoyed watching it and I think it was an excellent way to be introduced to the thoroughly gory theme of this play. Putting on a one-man show definitely requires skill, especially when you only have vegetables to keep you company, but it was done very well and everyone in the audience enjoyed it.
The use of the food and utensils in the kitchen to represent the key figures of the story was very intelligent, and obviously helped to tell the gruesome story as vividly as possible.
Overall, despite the lack of 'Shakespearean' feel, I really enjoyed this show and would definitely recommend it to children, or anyone who has never quite understood Shakespeare; you'll never feel the same way about it again!
