The film is an animated musical set in 1920s New Orleans with a modern twist on the classic fairy tale of a princess kissing a frog and it turning into a prince. Tiana is a very hard working girl who dreams of having her own restaurant one day, saving every penny she can to try and achieve this. She comes across a talking frog, who turns out to be Prince Naveen, who has had a voodoo spell cast upon him by the menacing Shadow man Dr. Facilier. When Tiana agrees to kiss the frog to try and break the spell she is turned into a frog herself. Tiana and Naveen then set out on a journey through the bayou together trying to find a way to break the voodoo spell.
By using traditional hand-drawn animation and not 3D computer-generated (CG) animation the film has a very classic Disney feel to it. Combined with the jazz inspired music used it fits the 1920s New Orleans setting perfectly. The songs in the film are very catchy and my favourite ones are ‘When We’re Human’ and ‘Dig a Little Deeper’. The colours used in the film are beautiful, particularly the greens and blues used in the bayou scenes. The film has something for everyone: romance, with Tiana and Naveen’s love story; comedy moments from the jazz trumpet playing alligator Louis; some very sad moments such as when Ray the firefly sings about his love Evangeline; and some quite scary scenes with the voodoo Shadow man Dr. Facilier. I really liked the moral of the film which showed that family and love are more important than money and material things and the importance of having a balance between working hard and having some fun. I loved this film and would highly recommend watching it.
Excellent review, very detailed and just enough information to encourage people to watch the movie
