BAFTAs 2020: The Winners

Seven awards leaves 1917 the undisputed winner of the evening

BAFTAs 2020: The Winners

It seems that the awarding panel of the BAFTAs had a very different view of 1917 than Voice’s resident film buff Tayo, bestowing the World War One spectacle seven awards, including best film, best British film, best director and best cinematography.

The controversial Todd Philips Joker film walked away with three, and lead actor Joaquin Phoenix used his acceptance speech to criticise "systemic racism" and "oppression" within the film industry, following a diversity row because of the all-white list of nominees for acting.

Diversity, or the lack thereof, has been a trend during this award season. Criticism was drawn against the Academy Awards for failing to nominate a single female director, and the Grammy’s were similarly slated, with Diddy calling out the lack of respect given to black artists and music generally.
