Buffy is a cult classic, and no matter how many people have tried to discredit it, Buffy fans stood united. One fan took it that step further and decided to immortalise the memory of Buffy in the most fantastic way any fan could have asked for.
All 7 seasons, most of the characters – the fun ones anyway – in 70 minutes. That person is Brendan Murphy, and he’s bringing everyone’s favourite vampire, Spike, back from the dead with a bang loud enough to open the Hellmouth.
Brendan is a natural born performer. He’s brilliant and he couldn’t have asked for a better audience. We clung onto his every word, and every single joke landed where it was supposed to – with each laugh louder than the last.
Nobody asked for Buffy Revamped, but boy did we need it. Lots of shows at the fringe this year are based on all the terrible things happening in our society, which you know, is understandable. But it was so nice to see a show that’s only purpose was to entertain. It gave the audience a space to reminisce about something that once bought us all so much joy, and that’s what made the energy in the room so electric. That and the original musical numbers.
Spike was always my favourite character, so as long as he didn’t butcher his memory, there was no way I was leaving this show disappointed. Brendan is brilliant, the show was brilliant, and if you want to have a brilliant time where you get to use chopsticks like a vampire killing stake, then Buffy Revamped is where you need to be.
Buffy Revamped is playing daily at the Pleasance EIIC at 19:30.
