In a story that no one really expected, but is a truly genius business move, Eminem has opened up a spaghetti restaurant in Detroit. The store, named Mom’s Spaghetti, is an obvious reference to one of the most famous lines in his iconic 2002 hit track Lose Yourself, which featured on the soundtrack for the film he starred in, 8 Mile.
The lyrics are as follows: “His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy / There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti.” The phrase has transcended popular culture, becoming inescapable even for those who aren’t fans of the rapper’s music, through constant memeing over the past two decades since the song’s release.
The restaurant was opened in Eminem’s home city, and the rapper came to man the stall for a short period on its opening day. He served his pasta and greeted the first ten customers that ordered at the shop, taking photographs with those who had camped out in the early hours of the morning to secure a spot at the front of the queue. The line of customers reportedly spanned “several blocks” by its opening time at 5pm, according to Detroit Free Press.
Mom’s Spaghetti is located within the newly opened Union Assembly restaurant, and you can check out Eminem’s menu here. Paul Rosenberg, who is Eminem’s manager, said in a recent statement: “We’ve had a lot of fun putting this project together with the folks at Union Joints, and the response from fans has been overwhelmingly positive.” He added: “The previous pop-ups were really a test for us to determine whether there was enthusiasm for a regularly-occurring Mom’s Spaghetti spot that would be open all year long.”
“We are really pleased to announce the arrival of the walk-up restaurant and adjacent upstairs store, called The Trailer, where fans can experience a uniquely-curated environment and obtain merch and other items from Eminem and his new pasta operation.”
The store opening coincides with the release of a new track from Eminem and Skylar Grey, with support from Polo G and Mozzy that is featured in the new Venom 2 film soundtrack. It follows his past inclusion in the franchise, when his track Venom, from his album Kamikaze, was attributed to the first film in 2018.
