Critical Mass 2022: Young people offered the chance to dance at the Commonwealth Games

Aimed at young people aged 16-30 with an interest in dancing on the global stage, Critical Mass are currently looking to recruit 300 disabled and non-disabled participants to attend a number of dance workshops in preparation for performances at events like the Birmingham Festival and the Commonwealth Games 2022.

The project marks a collaboration between over 70 dance organisations represented by the DDLG, along with Arts Connect and DanceXchange.

Those who are accepted will have the opportunity to attend 400 dance/movement workshops and creative sessions hosted by professional dancers across a 14-month journey. The workshops will be geared towards teaching new dance styles, networking between emerging dancers, and giving participants experience dancing under a range of different contexts.

The events will take place across the West Midlands and will be expected to garner an audience of millions, with the Commonwealth Games alone likely to broadcast to over a billion viewers

Raidene Carter, Executive Producer for Culture Programme and Live Sites at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games has stated: “This is a truly once in a lifetime opportunity for young people from across the West Midlands to be involved in some of the biggest events to ever take place in our region.

“We are on the look out for a truly diverse collective who represent Birmingham’s vibrant communities with an enthusiasm for creating memorable moments for spectators to enjoy on a regional, national and international scale."

The rehearsal sessions will take place weekly in smaller groups with approximately 1.25 hours dedicated to each session. A number of optional workshops will take place alongside rehearsals.

The sign-up process can be found here. Critical Mass are particularly interested in encouraging applicants from BAME backgrounds and/or ones who have a disability.
