Interview with Tom Parry

"This year more than ever I feel compelled to say at least something about what is happening in this country of ours. But hopefully with a very light touch. The news is such a constant in our lives people want a bit of escapism."

Interview with Tom Parry

Could you first introduce yourself to the reader?

Hey Team! Tom Parry here!

How would you describe your show?

It’s a celebration of things that I love in life- wedding speeches, music festivals and Karaoke!

Why do you want to perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

Because it always feels like such a privilege to be part of the worlds greatest arts festival!

What differentiates it from other festivals?

It’s scale! It’s variety. It’s attitude. God I can’t wait for it to start now!!

What first motivated you to enter the industry? Who were your inspirations?

Honestly I was just mucking about with friends and making stuff so I never really saw it as an industry. More a hobby that spiralled out of control.

If you didn’t have your current job, what would you probably be doing?

My family are all teachers- I would deffo be teaching by now.

If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?

THIS ONE!!!!!!

What is your earliest childhood art memory

Going to panto at the Wolverhampton Grand. I think it was Ruth Madoch from Hi De HI in Babe in the Woods!

Do you ever feel any pressure to be a social commentator, or constantly update material to respond to events?

This year more than ever I feel compelled to say at least something about what is happening in this country of ours. But hopefully with a very light touch. The news is such a constant in our lives people want a bit of escapism.

Equally, do you think there has been a shift in public sentiment that has affected your work?

Perhaps. It is hard to know what has effected your work until it’s completed and you can look back on it with some perspective.

Describe the last year in 5 words or less?

I just got flippin married!!!

If you could work with anybody, from any point in history, who would you pick and why?

David Byrne. He’s a creative genius and perhaps the greatest living Scotsman!!

Why would a performer opt to do either a ticketed event or participate in the free fringe? What are the benefits and limitations of both?

God- it depends on what angle you’re approaching the festival. Everyone is coming at this beast from a different place and looking for different things. There is no right or wrong way to do it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to take a show up to the fringe?

Do it for the right reasons- Don’t think about what you can take out of this festival but what you can put in.

When and where can people see your show?

Pleasance Courtyard- 6pm- Please come along!!

And where can people find, follow and like you online?

I’m on @tomosp on Twitter!!
