Exploring the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) - A free workshop in London

About this event

Starts: Monday 21 October 2019 1:00 PM

Ends: Monday 21 October 2019 4:00 PM

At: The Royal Society of Arts, 8 John Adam Street, London, WC2N 6EZ

Organised by: Upstart Projects

Discuss the good it might do, how it might be used in the future and what the product makers should consider - your privacy, how you want to use it, and how far it should go.  This afternoon will allow 14-25 year olds to get hands on with AI products, give you a chance to voice your thoughts and be considered as this technology develops.

What is AI? It’s all around us, here’s what we think a healthy AI should be: Artificial intelligence might bring to mind futuristic tech, like superhuman robots or devious computer systems. But algorithms that make decisions for us are embedded in emerging and familiar technologies today, from search engines and social networks to facial recognition and self-driving cars. At MozFest 2019, we’ll explore how machines are making decisions for us now, and what AI advances are on the horizon. Together we’ll brainstorm ways to bring more social responsibility, ethics, and user agency to AI... today, and in the future.

In short, AI is used for searching things online, for predicting what lanes to close on a smart motorway, for deterring what you’ve asked of Siri or Alexa for example.

You don’t have to be a techie, you don’t even have to know anything about how AI works.  We want people to come along with all viewpoints, creator or consumer, to learn a bit about it and feed in to the conversation.

We will be at The Royal Society of Arts which is right next to Charing Cross station.  There’s free coffee and refreshments available and the afternoon will start at 1pm.  We’ll finish around 4pm.  After an intro, we’ll go hands on with AI for a while, then have a break and get in to groups to discuss a few related questions for the last part.
