The Fashioning Our History Project explores diversity in fashion and art, through a series of workshops, and talks, culminating in an
exhibition of participants work and a fashion installation. The installation is illustrated by community participants, drawing on local
knowledge and emotions, and was presented to the public at The Willesden Green Library as part of the final Fashioning our History
Exhibition. The Fashioning our History project held a series of workshops for 26 selected applicants which focused on fashion and art.
The project also hosted a lecture week in April which was open to all, with a series of Instagram lives and pre-recorded talks from a
diverse range of creatives within the fashion and art industries. The project was created by Church End design graduate, Warren Reilly,
who was awarded the funding through an application entered into the London Borough of Culture, Culture Fund Scheme.
Funded by The Mayor of London and Brent Council. Originally part of London Borough of Culture 2020 - Postponed due to the
Pandemic. The 2020 Culture Fund is a grant scheme supporting local people and organisations to lead their own cultural activities as
part of Brent’s year as London Borough of Culture. Grants of up to £3,000 (for individuals) and up to £10,000 (for organisations),
approved by a community panel, were awarded over three rounds of funding.
The ‘Fashioning our History’ Exhibition showcased an extraordinary range of artwork from the 26 participants of the ‘Fashioning our History’ Programme and its core team. The project was funded by the Brent 2020 Culture Fund as part of the Brent 2020: London Borough of Culture programme. The work, from participants ranging from ages 12 to 22, explores the rich history and culture within Brent through a range of media and was viewed alongside a hand-illustrated fashion installation fashion piece. Elements of participants work were illustrated onto an eighteenth-century inspired dress, created by the projects Creative Director, Warren Reilly and Garment Technologist, Nicola Cummings. By reclaiming this style of dress (originally associated with the aristocratic elite) the installation piece represents a symbol of social change.
The participant’s artwork is a result of a series of online art and fashion workshops along with talks held during the recent lockdown, hosted by the Creative Director of the Fashioning our History Project, Warren Reilly, and a core team of 8 other creatives within the fashion and art industries. Creative Director Warren Reilly says “‘Fashioning our History’ is here to support the community in a time of seismic change, to inspire the next generation of creatives in the Borough of Brent and beyond. We hope that ‘Fashioning our History’ will encourage young creatives local to Brent and further afield to pursue their artistic passions. The project has also provided young creatives with the confidence and experience they need to begin their artistic journey.”
All the work that has been produced will be inaugurated into Brent Museum and Archive upon completion, which means that the project in its entirety will be stored for future generations, available for the public to handle, study and enjoy. The project was selected by a community panel and funded by the Mayor of London’s London Borough of Culture, and awarded the Pride of Brent Award in 2020 for its contribution to the community.
