Grayson Perry's Art Club: The Exhibition at MAC

Grayson Perry's Art Club: The Exhibition, is the third of its kind - this time coming to Birmingham's MAC. Inspired by Grayson Perry's TV show that became hugely popular during the pandemic, the message is simple: everyone and anyone can be an artist.

I visited on a cold but bright January morning with my parents. Walking into the building I was impressed by the scale of the exhibition - throughout my years visiting the MAC I had never seen a full building takeover. The venue was buzzing with activity, with people from all walks of life.

The exhibition was divided by theme, these included: Love, Heroes and Heroines, Inside My Head, Normal Life, Holidays and The Future. Given the breadth and variety of work (e.g photos, paintings, sculptures and more) I feel like there was something for everyone.

Some pieces that stuck out to me were Jamie (Jam) Westwood's Bonbons (100 Stories), which featured 100 bon bon bowls with everyday messages and concerns, Nicola Holman's painting of an older couple embracing in beautiful technicolour and Grayson Perry's aptly named Non-Fungible Token Vase that featured buzzwords of our time. It's worth noting that there are a number of celebrity artworks too, including Brum's own Joe Lycett.

Overall, I came away from the exhibition inspired to channel my own creativity and reflective on how art can unite people during the most challenging of times.
