Purpose
Arts and Culture organisations across the city have said that they would like young people aged 18-24 to become members of their management boards. They want to hear the views of young people and give them a real say in the running of their organisations.
Vision
We want young people to be able to make a meaningful contribution to the cultural life of the city. Birmingham Arts School will run a training weekend designed to prepare young people for the responsibility which being a board member entails.
Throughout the weekend, participants will:
- learn about the way in which arts organisations are managed
- learn about the roles and responsibilities of board members
- hear about the support structures available for new board members
- talk to young people who are current or previous board members of arts organisations
- meet the leaders of arts organisations seeking to recruit young people to their boards
Upon completion of the programme, participants will be placed with an arts organisation they have an interest in, and will also be provided with a mentor, an experienced member of the board. They will guide them through their first year with the organisation.
In previous years, participants have joined the boards of Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Birmingham Hippodrome, Fierce Festival, Midlands Arts Centre, Sampad, Coventry Biennial, and many more.
Participant Specification
- Aged 18 - 24 years old at the time of the training weekend
- Live, study, or work in the West Midlands
- Has a keen interest in arts and culture in Birmingham Wants to learn about arts/culture board structures
- Wants to influence the future of arts and culture in Birmingham
- Is available for all key dates of the programme
