Interview with Rowan Scourfield, Summer Showcase participant

For their submission to the 2021 Voice Summer Showcase, Rowan submitted their new single, "Locked away".

We invited Jack Solloway, Marketing Executive at Bloomsbury Digital Resources and former Assistant Editor to Voice, to join current Assistant Editor Saskia Calliste to view the submission and provide feedback to the artist.

Jack said: "What a talent! Songwriter, drummer, guitarist, vocalist, Rowan does it all. The music is well produced, the music video is too, and a clever take on Zoom-culture. I thought the whole song was professional beyond his years. The riff is super catchy and Rowan’s performance has great attitude. Many have tried to put into words this inarticulable time we’re living in, but ‘Locked Away’ says it all really."

Saskia said: "The highlight of this song for me was the instrumental. It was layered, well-played and very catchy. The song lyrics are timely and certainly relatable to people worldwide at the minute! Using Zoom, the lighting and the different angles all added to the video's well-thought-out aesthetic. The song had a great hook and was well performed."

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a singer songwriter and multi- instrumentalist from Hitchin in Hertfordshire.  I have just finished studying for my GCSEs and recently found out that I have won the BTEC music learner of the year 2021.  I released my debut album “The Beginning of the End”, comprised of 10 of my songs, during lockdown 1 and have released a single “Locked Away” during the lockdown earlier this year.

Give us a brief description of your submission?

This is a song I wrote, recorded and filmed during one of the lockdowns of the Covid-19 pandemic. It is about being shut away from family and friends.

How long have you been practicing your artform?

I started writing and performing my songs 7 years ago when I was 9 years old.

What is some advice you wish you'd had before you started your artform?

I can't think of any advice, I have been lucky with support from school, family and friends.

Who are your artistic inspirations?

The artists that particularly inspire me are Waterparks, All Time Low and Palaye Royale – I would love the opportunity to work with them one day.
