Interview with comedian Tony Law

Could you first introduce yourself to the reader?

My name is Tony Law

How would you describe your show?

Rambleshackle moving and talking and shouting. Absurdity. Bits about lockdowns. Falconry. Cancelling people. Ghost bees. All sorts. It’s pretty silly fare. Hopefully like a hug of funny.

Why do you want to perform at Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

To make more supporters and connect with my already followers. And to pay the bills.

What differentiates it from other festivals?

Month king of shows

What first motivated you to enter the industry? Who were your inspirations?

Steve Martin, Sean Lock, Stewart Lee, Phil Nichol, Mighty boosh.

How has your background, upbringing and education had an impact on your artistic career?

Not much education grew up on farm.  Lots of animals. Quite a lot. Machines and animals.

What is your earliest childhood art memory?

 First Nations art in Canada.

If you didn’t have your current job, what would you probably be doing?

History teacher. Or a not so great farmer.

Did Covid-19 change the way you create work? Do you approach shows with a different mentality now?

Well it gave me 2 more years of a run up to come up with a new hour. So very organic. All improvised bits that eventually became bits.

Describe the last year in 5 words or less?

Way better than last year.

Do you subscribe to the idea that art should be exempt from ‘cancel culture’?

Yes

If you could work with anybody, from any point in history, who would you pick and why?

Stalin.  He could teach me Georgian poetry and I could murder him.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to take a show up to the fringe?

Maybe don’t. Build your reputation up on line and use your young big brains. Visit fringe for two affordable days and watch posh kids plays and shows.

When and where can people see your show?

NOON at monkey barrel. Great folks.

And where can people find, follow and like you online?

Mrtonylaw at the big 3 usual thingys.
