On 28th September Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) will be holding a unique sleepout experience to raise funds for local youth homelessness charity, The Clock Tower Sanctuary.
The uplifting evening will include lullabies from singer Taylor Lally and bedtime stories from local poet Michael J Parker, as well as optional sunset yoga, massage treatments and a fish and chip supper, followed by a night under the stars. Tickets cost between £25-£45, with the money going to the charity, and guests are being encouraged to raise additional sponsorship or pledges through personal Just Giving pages.
BOAT Manager, Anne- Marie Williams says, "This is the fourth special charity event we have hosted at BOAT. Homelessness in Brighton & Hove is an overwhelming issue, so this year we are supporting The Clocktower Sanctuary who do amazing work with the young people directly affected.”
The Clock Tower Sanctuary receives around 4,000 visits every year from 16-25-year-olds who are homeless or insecurely housed. Their day-centre, located in the heart of the city, provides practical and emotional support to move homeless young people from crisis to stability.
Frances Duncan, CEO of The Clock Tower Sanctuary said: “We rely entirely on donations to keep our doors open and we’re so grateful for the support of the local community and BOAT. Every single pound helps - £10 can pay for a young person to have a hot shower, enjoy a cooked meal and do their laundry in our day centre.”
Ivan aged 23, who arrived in Brighton in 2019, spent six months job hunting, staying on the floors of friends until he eventually ran out of money. The precariousness of his situation led to a series of panic attacks. He says “The Clock Tower Sanctuary meets your basic needs, and that in turn allows you to get organised, to continue researching and get a job. Otherwise, you are in fight or flight survival mode and you can very easily spiral and become depressed and lonely.” With the help of CTS staff, volunteers and persistence, Ivan has now found a job and accommodation in London.
The Sleepout begins at 6pm on Saturday 28th Sept for 12 hours. Tickets can be booked on the BOAT website: https://www.brightonopenairtheatre.co.uk/event/lifeboat-4-sleepout-for-the-sanctuary/
