How We Begin – A New Play About Love, Identity, And Making Enough Room in Your Calendar to Sleep With Your Best Friend – Comes to VAULT Festival 2023.
How We Begin celebrates all things bisexual in a heartfelt portrayal of navigating the often complex nuances of a queer relationship. Opening on Valentine’s Day 2023 and running for 7 performances only, this is a hit new play about love, identity, and trying to make enough room in your calendar to sleep with your best friend.
“It’s weird, sleeping on someone else’s sofa. It’s even weirder when that sofa is the sofa of the woman you’re having a bisexual love affair with.”
Writer Elisabeth Lewerenz and director Elizabeth Benbow met in 2019 during the VAULT Writers Programme showcase, forming their company Surfacing Acts Theatre. How We Begin, which has been in development for two years, is the company's debut play. Director Elizabeth Benbow shares:
“This play proudly and powerfully showcases the joyful, sometimes messy facets of queer female love, which is often underrepresented or misrepresented in contemporary media. It brings me great joy to finally present this moving play to a larger audience and bring it back to where it all started.”
Produced in collaboration with creative producer Antonia Georgieva, the production comes full circle and finally takes to the VAULT Festival stage in 2023 after last year’s postponement.
Additionally, the script is 1 of 5 selected to be published in Nick Hern’s anthology of plays from this year’s festival.
Come and join us Wednesday at 12:30 PM and meet the creative minds behind what sounds like a great and timely show!
