Visit to the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art and Marianne North Gallery

On Sunday 9th of April 2023, I went to the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art and Marianne North Gallery in Kew Gardens in London which is the world’s first public gallery dedicated to classic and contemporary botanical art.

It has three different art galleries by various artists to look at. However, all the galleries had a common theme of plants and flowers.

In the first and second galleries, you can find the Plants of the Qur’an painted by Sue Wickison. With over 30 paintings on display Sue has painted various plants mentioned in the Qur’an with the help of researcher Dr Shahina Ghazanfar. What fascinated me was how the display showed the artists experiment with lots of colours and strokes.

“All the flowers are for me” is the third to fifth galleries by Anila Quayyum Agha. These galleries are filled with sculpture of beautiful patterns casting its shadows to create art. One room had a huge glass box with patterns engraved on each side shining the pattern everywhere. This was my favourite art from all the galleries and I enjoyed being emersed within the art.

“The wonderful world of Water Plants” is the final gallery of the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art. This gallery displays water plants, like water lilies and lotus flowers, painted in watercolour. I really liked the detail presented within the plants especially the flowers.

To conclude I really enjoyed the art displayed here and would recommend going because it is a great way to get in touch with nature round you and the world as well as learning about art techniques and mediums artists use to create their art.
