Kurt Jackson - Place - Victoria Art Gallery

A review for my Bronze Arts Award of Place by Kurt Jackson

Kurt Jackson - Place - Victoria Art Gallery

On 15 December I visited the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath to see an exhibition by Kurt Jackson called Place. For this exhibition 32 authors contributed texts on their favourite places and Kurt Jackson visited each of them to create an accompanying painting. These locations ranged from the Thames and Paddington Station to hill forts and mountains.

I really enjoyed the event. I think that Kurt Jackson is a very good artist. The idea of the exhibition was clever as it enabled the two Art forms - Art and Literature - to come together. It was very interesting as for some pieces he painted the scene using lots of inspiration from the writing and for others he took a more abstract angle. Kurt Jackson demonstrated a wide range of styles.

One of the techniques that I found most interesting was where he used fine dots on trees, water and skies to create a misty effect. An example of this technique is in his painting called 'Dart Pool':

I also really like the way that he shows tents at Glastonbury. As well as the Place exhibition he had some other paintings, including a few that he had done as he is the artist in residence at Glastonbury. I think that he shows energy and movement well in his paintings and the varied colour he uses for Glastonbury sums up the busy and colourful nature of the event:

One of my favourite paintings at the exhibition was 'Through Brandon Woods':

I really like Kurt Jackson's use of colour and texture to create mood in his paintings. I think that this painting sums up his style well. One of the reasons why I enjoyed the exhibition so much was that I like his style a lot and I think that I can take inspiration from it to my art work.

My favourite painting was called 'Frozen Loch Morlid, ice crack, chaffinch song, geese honk.' I really like the mood that is created by the clouds. Kurt Jackson has a very good eye for detail and the small bird on the ice adds a nice finishing touch to it. He often uses writing in his work and I think that it works particularly well for this exhibition as he sometimes used quotes from the writing. He uses colour well in all his paintings, but I think he is at his best when he is using blues. This painting works very well:

One thing that I dislike about the event was the sculpture. In my opinion, I thought that the paintings were much more interesting and the sculptures, which were in a very different style, did not fit so well with the theme of the exhibition. One of the sculptures, 'New Forrest box of oak', was clever in principle (a box of oak and glass and filled with acorns), but I thought that it did not look particularly impressive. Therefore, in my opinion, I thought that it would have benefitted from having the sculpture removed.

However, I thought that the event was very good. I think that one thing I liked about the event was the way that it showcased literature alongside the very impressive work of a highly talented artist. I really enjoyed the exhibiton as it was a style of painting that I like and I found it particularly interesting due to the fact that we had been recently studying the artist in Art. I think that the exhibition was presented well and it was nice that there was a screen showing the photos of the locations of the paintings.

I was very happy at the event. It was inspiring to see an artist that I had studied and his work is a lot more impressive in real life. I also felt amazed by his work as it was very different to what I had seen before. I think that I have had a very possitive reaction to the event as I enjoyed it a lot.

I think that I have learnt a lot from this exhibition. It has taught me some new techniques that I might use in further pieces of Art work. I think that the way he uses texture and colour is particularly effective and I could use some of his methods in my work. It has also taught me the difference that a single, fine detail can make to a painting.

I think that this event has inspired me in two ways. The first is to see more of Kurt Jackson and his work as I think that it is truly amazing. I would also like to try to see more similar pieces of work. The second way that it has inspired me is to use some if his techniques that work particularly well in some of my work. This exhibition has helped me to decide that I want to use Kurt Jackson as my inspiration for my final piece in Art. I think that it has inspired me because the exhibiton shows a large range of his work in different styles and medium.

I would recommend this event to a friend (and I have done) as I think that you can get a lot from the exhibition no matter what your ability is. He is a truly inspirational artist who creates outstanding and creative pieces of art. I would encourage anybody to go to the event or to look up pieces if his art as they make you think and there is more to them the closer you look
