Behind Closed Doors

A review of Bancroft Campus ADAD Theatre Company's performance of Behind Closed Doors.

An Evaluation of a live performance

By Jake Curston.

On Monday 19th October 2015 at Bancroft Campus ADAD Theatre Company performed "Behind Closed Doors". A brief synopsis of this play would be: A group of friends that fancied each other, one of the lads started to become abusive and controlling of the relationship that was formed. This led to the male swinging out at the female in frustration. This also meant that the actions from that night led to consequences.

In this play there were four actors, two male characters and two female characters. One of the male actors playing the friend and the father figure. The characters showed that they were in their young adult years by what they wore and how they spoke. For example in the father scene where the dad finds out about the dress he uses a different language vocabulary to when he is the friend. Whilst he is the friend he tends to use more shorter and snappy words to symbolise he is young. The changes between the father and the friend were illustrated by changing his tone of voice and his posture from well presented as an adult and slumped and lousy as a young adult.

ADAD theatre always uses a basic set design, this is cardboard boxes with spray paint on them and they always stack them up on top of each other to make a pyramid. There are many reasons why they use this design the first one being backstage so they can change and be out of view of the audience whilst they are not performing. Another reason is that they want to show to people that when performing you do not need a complicated stage as it is not what you have on stage but the imagination you have and how you make use of it. They completed this effectively by adding music for the scenes and also using everyday essentials as props. This was demonstrated in the arcade scene where the two male characters used two chairs and a piece of face music to symbolise being on the arcade machine.

I really enjoyed watching this performance they performed and preferred this one to the last one because this one kept me more interested. The last time they performed I felt that the play didn't really catch my eye and some parts I saw were quite boring whereas this play they kept me entertained the whole time and I found no boring parts in the performance. Another plus to the play was that this was an educational play and at the same time of this being entertaining this was also educational and taught you a lesson at the same time. This had vital points in the play that shouldn't be ignored and they showed the consequences of the actions that they done, showing that some can be bad and some can be good and that you should always think about what you are doing before you do it and also think whether what you do is going to be helpful.
