"Syd & Sylvia is a face-punch right in the patriarchy...brutal, honest, uncompromising and urgent... one of the best pieces I've seen this year. Everyone should have a chance to see it" - Jen Smethurst, SPILL National Platform Project Manager & General Manager, Sh!t Theatre
Using bastardised karaoke lyrics, cheesy keyboard playing and bad jokes, Claudia Jefferies relays harrowing anecdotes of misogyny and sexual assault in this one-woman show about control, expectation and the crap that women face every day.
Claudia Jefferies is a Theatre Maker and Performer who combines character acting, live art and new writing to make politicised solo theatre shows. Her work is feminist and concerned with gender as performance, seeking to take overlooked and over-tolerated examples of everyday hideousness and expose them with gaudy, theatrical splendour. Claudia is the first Associate Artist of Carnesky's Finishing School. In 2013, she devised and performed her first solo show, Jewel, which was inspired by the phenomenon of child beauty pageants in the USA. Jewel was nominated for a Fringe Guru One to Watch award following its debut at Brighton Fringe and was programmed by Battersea Arts Centre for their New To Edinburgh scheme.
Syd & Sylvia is the second solo show from Jefferies and has been in development since late 2015. This show seeks to create public awareness of sexual harassment and to highlight its routine presence in women's lives in a way that extends beyond everyday discourse into an affecting and challenging piece of theatre.
