About this event

Starts: Tuesday 13 June 2023 10:00 AM

Ends: Tuesday 13 June 2023 2:15 PM

At: The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Bethesda Street, Staffordshire, ST1 3DW

We are excited to be offering a FREE STEM day at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery run by the RAF Youth and STEM team on 13 June 2023.

The role of the Youth and STEM Team is to engage and inspire the next generation of innovators, aviators and engineers.

We have 2 class spaces and are looking for Y5 or Y6 classes from Stoke-on-Trent schools. We need classes of at least 30 pupils. Two (or more) form entry will be considered. The school also needs to have a high ratio of children on free school meals to qualify for the free sessions.

Schools will take part in 2, 90 minute STEM activities, including LEGO coding and creating and testing a glider.

Schools taking part will need to be able to arrive at the museum at 10.00 am and leave at 14.15 pm. A picnic area will be provided for lunch.

If you would like to take part please e-mail [email protected]

For more information on the STEM day activities please see the information below.

Robotics and Coding

The participants will work in groups of three, using LEGO Education SPIKE Prime to develop robot rescue vehicles. They will develop their builds and then bring them to life with coding. Coding will be developed using an iPad-based App - focusing on coding in word blocks. The main part of the session will culminate in 'LEGO Race Time' - an opportunity for the participants to showcase their programmed builds. An extension to the activity will be to utilise a range of sensors with the robot vehicle - such as a colour and or an ultrasonic sensor.

Theory of Flight

Working in small groups, students will explore the components that make up an aircraft and the forces that affect it in flight. They will build individual paper gliders and conduct a test flight down a runway. Students will use their new ‘Theory of Flight’ knowledge to adjust their gliders and improve their flight patterns before a final attempt to score the winning flight of the day.
