Diary of a Gen Z Woman

Tuesday 6th June 2023

An interview – grey suit trousers, a white blouse, and a cardigan. Simple, easy and nobody even notices me. This is a selection day process, and I am the youngest in the room. Doubt crosses each person’s eyes who bothers to make conversation with me. When walking into that room my mind fills with doubt, but of course something our generation has perfected is not caring about what others think… or at least this is what I’m telling myself.

Wednesday 7th June 2023

Waitressing, black jeans, and a black top. Easy and simple, I wore this to the restaurant and back. It was a late shift, and it was not worth the risk of wearing something more intriguing. Like this I can fit into the background. Something that has been found to be easier when traveling alone as a young woman.

Going out! Its student night and the black bralette with suit trousers are out. Of course, walking to the dingy student bar was not without a few eagle eyes on my chest. It feels degrading, it feels like I’m being told off my secondary school teacher again because my skirt it too short. It reminds of the intolerance that is shown even within university settings. Where in debate society a young man took one look at my skirt and insulted me, something that seeps into each cranny of my mind at moments like these.

Thursday 8th June 2023

Dickies work trousers, a vest, and a Hawaiian shirt. I’m with my dad and no one looks twice. We sit in Greenwich and my dog sits right in the middle of the pathway. Begging for attention from each stranger who walks past.

Sunday 11th June 2023

A short pink mini skirt and a white crop top, now this one was a cute outfit but came with its downfalls. Like ten bloodhounds drooling down my legs, hungry to catch a glimpse of something more. The tube ride to Stratford was full of strange men trying to catch a peak. London and summer present a challenge to many. While you want to dress in summer clothing, that does not come without stares.

For us everything has been centred around how we look, how the world perceives us, and this can change with a t shirt in some settings. Its something everyone has been accustomed to living with, old or young – but gen z and their false façade are winning.
