Hidden Sounds of Coastal Arcades: A Nostalgic Summer Memory

A review of the BBC Sounds audio "Hidden Sounds of Coastal Arcades."

In the first few seconds alone, Between The Ears: Hidden Sounds of Coastal Arcades created a nostalgic feeling within me. I was taken back to a simple moment: eating ice cream on a pebbly beach with my family, surrounded by the sounds of laughing children and the waves crashing against the sandy shore while the sun beat down upon us. The sounds of the arcade that followed were just as familiar and nostalgic.

The sounds of crowds enjoying their days at the pier were accompanied by narration from people both old and young sharing their memories of these arcade and coastal sounds. This combination of narration and natural audio blended together seamlessly. Whichever sounds the people spoke about shortly followed their commentary; it was almost like the sounds were evidence that what each person was saying was true. This added depth and a unique perspective to the audio, as it became more than just sounds of a mass of passersby that had been recorded. Not only do we hear the laughter of children and the screams of people on rollercoaster rides, but we then get to hear from these people and hear their experiences, which only deepens the nostalgia.

I found myself smiling when someone shared a memory that I related to and had experienced myself. I found myself intrigued by someone’s comment about all the people who had walked the pier throughout history, giving it a completely timeless feeling. But most of all, I found myself very content when listening to the audio. We live in a complicated world, where there is so much conflict, and it was nice to hear something so simplistic that took me back to childhood memories that I look at fondly.

While I am only one person, I know I am not the only one who relates to this, and I am sure that anyone who listens will be filled with fond summer memories that you wish you could relive.
