Elon Musk and Tesla pride themselves on being at the forefront of technological innovation, attempting to create self-driving cars, colonising Mars, underground transport tunnels, an “impenetrable” cybertruck, and even flamethrowers. Musk’s next venture was recently announced at Tesla’s AI Day event, showcasing a humanoid, AI-powered robot, launching in 2022.
The ‘Tesla bot’ is set to use the same AI that Tesla vehicles use, and will stand at 5’8 in height and weigh 57kg. The robots will be made from lightweight materials, with a display on their body that will show information about the machine.
Musk announced that the robot will be “friendly and navigate through a world built for humans” but that they will be built on a “mechanical level”, so people will be able to run away from them and overpower them easily if anything was to go wrong.
The robot’s purpose is to do jobs or activities deemed “unsafe, repetitive or boring”, as Tesla’s website stated. Musk said: “Essentially, in the future, physical work will be a choice. If you want to do it, you can, but you won’t need to do it.”
The entrepreneur and business magnate has warned of AI robot ramifications for the past few years, in 2017, stating that there was a 5 to 10 percent chance of AI robots becoming safe. Last year, he said there was a risk of human life being overtaken by AI before 2025.
"We’re headed toward a situation where AI is vastly smarter than humans, and I think that time frame is less than five years from now. But that doesn’t mean that everything goes to hell in five years. It just means that things get unstable or weird."
As well as his SpaceX company, Tesla and Boring, Musk has mentioned that he is also working on AI microchips to be implemented into the human brain that will connect the user to a computer in an attempt to create human-AI symbiosis.
