Bandcamp Fridays was an initiative initially launched back in March 2020 as a way to support artists throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. The company has now announced that the event is back on from the first Friday of February, continuing until at least May on the first Friday of every month.
The initiative will work similarly to how it had done before, with Bandcamp waiving the revenue share for all sales taken on the days. This is a great opportunity for artists, as all of the proceeds from each sale will go directly to the artists themselves.
Bandcamp released a statement about the reintroduction: “On the first Friday of the month since March of 2020, we’ve waived our revenue share to help support the many artists who have seen their livelihoods disrupted by the pandemic.” They added, “Over the course of 17 days, fans paid artists and labels more than $70 million dollars [£52m], helping cover rents, mortgages, groceries, medications, and much more.”
“If you’re among the nearly 800,000 fans who participated, thank you. It will likely be several months before live performance revenue returns in full. So we’re going to continue doing Bandcamp Fridays in 2022, on 4 February, 4 March, 1 April, and 6 May.”
The music industry is still reeling from the impact that the pandemic has had, and Bandcamp consistently proves that they are behind upcoming musicians and seeing them adequately paid for their work. With the drama surrounding other music platforms and their rates of pay, the company is certainly setting a high standard for how services should treat their artists.
