Appropriate - Sarah-Jane Scott

Sarah-Jane Scott plays Sorcha, a women who at first, appears to be a runaway bride as she sprints into the room in a long, classy, wedding dress. She soon confirms that she in fact just slipped away from her wedding reception to calm her thoughts. We are then taken on a whirlwind of a story as she goes through the ins and outs of her relationship with childhood sweetheart, Martin; high school dances, Essex men in clubs and a proposal that was more than predicted. Appropriate is a witty tale of an Irish woman living in the countryside that has you gripped to find out what else could possibly happen. She takes us on a rollercoaster of emotions as she speaks fondly of her dad and passionately of the (quite literal) fights she encounters later on down the line. Scott is charming and endearing and puts on an engaging show.

The stage is bare, with just a pale chair in the centre that she flings herself down on to recall hilarious events in her life. Her bouquet lays forgotten on the floor. The lighting is simple and only changes to take you along with her on her journey of stories. The previously warm lit stage transforms into a night club scene as disco ball reflects on the walls and the room descends into a purple light.

This hour long monologue is full of ups and downs and Scott is charming and witty. If you are a lover of Shania Twain and and troublesome romantic stories, you’ll love this Irish comic. You can find Appropriate at Summerhall.
