Direct Art Action Review

Arts Review

I visited Direct Art Action in Sutton Coldfield on the 1st March 2018. I went there to look at art work which artist from the local areas had as part of an exhibition. The gallery is in an old shop that was empty and is free. It’s open on Wednesday – Saturday in the afternoons. As a group we spoke to two of the artists, James Ware and Fran Vere who are completely different artists.  James Ware loves to explore the human body by painting it and he also does charcoal drawings which is fine art. Fran Vere likes to layer different images together through photography. There were lots of different types of art work there such as 3D, photography, painting and many more. All of these are visual arts. There was also a shop where you could buy work from some of the artists who had work on display. I have seen some art work like what was there before but not all of it. It was very interesting to learn about their work and life and it helped me to understand what the work was about.

The exhibition was good as we looked at all different types of art work. I enjoyed looking at all the different work on display. We spoke to two artists about the type of work they had on display and we did an image analysis for piece of each of their work. Fran Vere’s star sign is Pisces and so she likes to do a lot of water related images. James Ware enjoys doing portraits of the female body. It would have been better if some of the other artists were there as well to explain their work because it was hard to understand what some of the work was about especially if it was abstract. Also that there was nowhere to sit down as they didn’t have any chairs but I might have looked at things for longer if there was a place to stop and sit.

I would recommend going to the Direct Art Action gallery as there is all different art work that you may be interested in. It is local for anyone in Sutton and free. You can go while you’re out shopping. I learnt that anybody has the chance to be an artist, you just need help to complete different types of art work and see what you enjoy. I learnt that it possible to become an artist even if you didn’t do it at school for example doing an evening class as the man who organised the gallery did his training later in life.

Lovely stuff, Natasha! Would you like to be an artist one day?
