The Devil Without

The Ethereal plane collides with reality in this suspenseful, church-set show.

The Devil Without

St.Andrews Church, programmed for Brighton Fringe by the wide-reaching Sweet venues is located right near the Seafront, and is a perfect setting for this show, adding an intriguing dynamic.

There is only one guy, John, hosting the whole performance, and he puts to us in an important manner: 'Words are magic'. He has a plausible backstory that suits his position.

The sound is fantastic; there are binaural beats and music involved that fits in well with the performance, with the binaural beats relaxing the brain and the music making the performance come alive.

This show contains much audience participation, and I myself was called up to the stage for this particular performance, where I found myself under hypnosis and on the Ethereal plane for the very first time. I woke up feeling a bit exhausted and found myself listening to the whole thing from the host's perspective, following along with what he was saying.

Another audience member in particular has the most dramatic moment of participation, as he was nearly possessed by the demon that was hunting John down - was quite a scare - but thankfully me, John and all of the audience members got him back to reality using our synchronised heartbeats as anchors. We all left the church safely.

Overall, it was an outstanding performance and I recommend it to those who are looking to witness how words are indeed magic.

I was a member of the New Writing South Young Writers Programme (Year 3) at Theatre Royal Brighton and I had an amazing time there making my own play 'The Secret Operation' come to life at the start of May 2016. I have now reviewed a total of 13 shows from 3 years of Brighton Fringe.
