The Voice Thief

Wonderful children's promenade theatre.

The Voice Thief

The MacKenzie Institute for the Encouragement of Vocal Harmony (MIEVH) opens its doors, but only to those who consent aural scrubbing… As we are taken on a tour of the establishment events unfold that make us question the ideas of vocal perfection and female entrapment.

The cast of four (Crawford Logan, May MacGregor, Hannah Donaldson and Isabelle Joss) lead us into the dark both literally and metaphorically, taking us on an emotional rollercoaster through the incredibly immersive style. The scene is set as we are taken down into the basement, travelling through various rooms and alcoves in which the performance takes place.

The set is beautifully designed; in fact, all of the visual and audio elements are well thought out, not only complementing but also enhancing the talented acting, writing and direction. Costume was also brilliantly designed, fitting with all the varying scenes and atmospheric influences.

As the acronym MIEVH suggests, the show encompasses themes regarding the beauty, (or not as the case may be) of the voice. Lead antagonist Dr MacKenzie has the air of a villainous stock character about him, which makes this children's show easy to follow and almost fairytale-esque.

An excellent performance, executed with skill, elegance, and drama. The audience were captivated, highly engaged and thoroughly entertained. A very well deserved 5 stars.

The Voice Thief is on 12-16, 18-23, 25-30 at Summerhall, (Venue 26) at 14:00 and 18:00. Suitability: PG, (9+). Tickets and more information is available here.
