Unmasking your online reality – MozFest 2017 Youth Zone

Social media plays a huge role in who we are, shaping our identities in the real world as well as those we present on the web. The 'unmasking your online reality' session at MozFest 2017 invites you to consider who you want to be and what you want to look like to other social media users, and indeed the wider online community. We all reconstruct our own reality in any given situation, but sometimes our online reputation precedes us, and this isn't always for the better.

During the session, you will be given a plain white mask to deface using sharpie markers, turning the 'blank canvas' into the version of your identity you aim to portray online.

You will be invited to wear your mask and be filmed using a 360 degree camera, with your new online identity existing in digital space as part of a VR experience. Your mask will also then become part of a physical art instillation/group exhibition over the weekend.

This session would benefit those interested in:

  • The impacts of social media and the responsibilities we all have online
  • Creative use of technology
  • Visual art, craft, curating and performance
  • Digital art, VR and film
