The Perfumist of Paris by Alka Joshi

Paris 1974: Radha now lives in Paris with her husband Pierre and their two daughters. Over the course of a decade, Radha evolves from a novice to a key player in the fragrance industry, collaborating with a master perfumer. While she finds fulfilment in her career, a divide grows between her and Pierre. He is clearly frustrated about her decision not to stay at home, but Radha is unwilling to give up her passion. Assigned her first major project, Radha ventures back to her homeland India, recruiting her sister Lakshmi and the courtesans of Agra to infuse their expertise into her creations—fragrances that captivate, allure, and tantalise. Just as Radha stands on the brink of a significant breakthrough, a revelation disrupts her carefully planned life. The son she never disclosed to Pierre is en route to Paris, ready to uncover secrets that could unravel her already delicate marriage.

Alka Joshi's evocative descriptions of smells and scents breathe life into the narrative. Set against the backdrops of Paris and Agra, the vibrant sights and intoxicating fragrances vividly emerge through Joshi's sensory portrayals. Readers are immersed in a world where the essence of both cities becomes an integral part of the storytelling. The narrative serves as a journey not only through the sensory landscapes of two distinct locales but also as a cultural exploration. Different aspects of Indian culture are seamlessly threaded into the narrative, offering readers an immersive experience that goes beyond the sense of smell. In the hands of the author, the fusion of scents, sights, and cultural nuances creates a truly exciting reading experience.

Furthermore, Joshi exhibits not only expertise in describing landscapes but also in crafting compelling characters. Radha, in particular, stands out as a fascinating character with considerable depth. Her portrayal as a strong and independent individual adds to the story's richness. Using Radha as a central figure, the narrative skillfully contrasts the traditional roles men expected women to fulfil with the emerging paths women courageously embraced, despite the inherent challenges. Whilst Pierre expects Radha to stay home and look after the home and children, Radha craves the excitement and satisfaction of pursuing her career in perfumery. Radha's journey becomes a reflection of the genuine struggles faced by women, encompassing the balance of being a working mother and contending with the judgement from those around her.

In summary, this engaging narrative effortlessly blends the allure of scents with the challenges of womanhood, offering readers a story that is both rich and relatable.
