Today is a fab fab day in the Swiftieverse as Miss Tay just dropped her re-recorded album, ‘1989 Taylor’s Version’. It’s safe to say that she has well and truly spoiled us again, too, with the new release including five previously unheard tracks from “the vault”.
Some thoughts on ‘Sl*t!'.
Despite the name perhaps causing potential listeners to expect something bold and punchy, instead your ears are met by a light, airy track perfectly in keeping with the vibes of 1989. It isn’t at all surprising that Taylor wrote this song in the 1989 era, although at the same time it makes sense why she left it off of the original award-winning album.
The release of 1989 in 2014 had a tracklist which told a consistent narrative, weaving tales of love and heartbreak among feelings of letting go. However ‘Sl*t!’ is a bop more about reclaiming a narrative: the word sl*t is sang in a floating tone, as if it’s being brushed off by both the singer as well as wider society. Yes, the song is still one about love like many were in the 1989 era, but this one seems cheekier, more sultry, more teasing but in a tasteful, classy way for her audience.
‘Welcome To New York’ and this song would work well together as the start of a new album compilation on their own, honestly. They both consist of simple yet effective songwriting, and a fun-inducing energy that makes a listener want to sing along or dance. But it has to be said: ‘Sl*t!’ is as empowering as it is catchy.
Among an often misogynistic industry, it’s always refreshing to see female stars finding ways to clap back at the harsh terms thrown their way. It’s impossible to have a dating life, every outfit is photographed to the max, every make-up look is analysed and scrutinised by the eyes of millions.
‘Sl*t!’ is a great track for many reasons, from its uniqueness as a love song to the way it can provoke a listener to consider the deeper depths that come with the lives of a female celebrity. Go listen now!
