Disenchanted (2022) Review

I watched Disenchanted on Disney + which was released on 18th November 2022.

Disenchanted, directed by Adam Shankman, is the long-awaited sequel to the hit 2007 film Enchanted. It follows Giselle as she moves to the suburbs for her "Happily Ever After" but finds that it's not always that simple in the real world.

The film begins several years after Giselle’s happily ever after in New York city. Life is starting to get boring and basic for the family, so, much to Morgan’s (who is now a teenager) dismay they decide to move to the suburbs. Life is not much better there, so Giselle has no choice but to make a wish, turning the whole town into a real-life fairy tale and herself into a wicked stepmother. Can the wish be undone before it’s too late?

This film saw the return of many beloved faces, such as Amy Adams as Giselle, James Marsden as King Edward and Idina Menzel as Queen Nancy. It was great to see these actors reprise their roles in the sequel because they gave just as great of a performance as ever. As well as that, we also got to meet some new faces, such as Gabriella Baldacchino as Morgan, Maya Rudolph as Malvina Monroe, Yvette Nicole Brown as Rosaleen and Jayma Mays as Ruby. I felt these new faces really added something to the film and all gave a terrific performance.

I think the film does a good job of showing the harshness of reality and the musical numbers are magnificent. I especially loved the references to several different Disney films throughout. One thing that i thought could be improved though, is its predictable plot. Although it is an original story, I found the whole idea of trying to overcome the wickedness caused by yourself to restore everything to peace, quite predictable and I wasn’t really shocked by the ending at all.  

Overall, I think that it is a very good film and is definitely worth watching. I would rate it 4.5 out of 5 stars as it is a lot of fun and a great film to watch with your family.
