Isabella Sewell | TrinityTalent 2021

14-year-old Isabella was nominated for TrinityTalent Class of 2021 for Creative Flair. She achieved Bronze Arts Award at Colchester High School. She used the experience of working towards Arts Award to develop her music and song-writing skills, creating her own version of a song with bass, piano and backing vocals. Isabella is a music scholar at CHS and acts as a fantastic role model for other students from Nursery to Year 11 who are reportedly mesmerised by her singing.

Isabella was nominated by Mercedes Romero-Fernández, Head of Music at Colchester High School who said: "Issy has a really distinctive and amazing aura when performing, her performances are just breath-taking. Her creative flair is clearly demonstrated throughout her Bronze Arts Award digital portfolio, from the design of the e-book to the reflective written content and videos showing some of her song material."

The TrinityTalent panel said: "We are so impressed with the range of artforms and genres in Isabella's Arts Award. She's shown depth and amazing creative potential in combining sounds and lyric writing to make her own music. She's also demonstrating a leadership role in her music department!"

How do you feel about being selected to be part of TrinityTalent Class of 2021 and being recognised in this way?
I am delighted to know something I have devoted time, effort and love to has been recognised and appreciated. I’m honored to be picked; for I know there are many inspirational young people just like me eager to share their art. Overall, I’m so pleased that my songs have reached out and have positively affected the team behind Trinity College London qualifications. I am more than thankful they have given me a platform to reach more individuals and encourage them to explore their art just like me through the Bronze Arts Award.

How do you feel you have developed creatively and artistically in 2021?
Emotionally, 2021 was a difficult year with Covid-19 bringing obstacles causing personal struggle. However, through my perseverance great achievement has been gained. Covid-19 restrictions meant I had to adapt and widen my expression of art, therefore I digitally formed my songs at home so I could still share my music whilst following the government guidelines. This allowed me to develop my skills as a musician.

What impact did your Arts Award achievement have on your artistic development?
It encouraged me to keep practising and persevering in songwriting giving me a clear goal and an aim to work towards.

Has taking part in an Arts Award helped you to develop wider skills, such as communication skills, creativity or confidence?
Yes, I helped younger students in my school learn a song I wrote myself. This allowed me to share my passion and also develop my abilities to run a session which improved my confidence and communication skills. It has given me a chance to hopefully inspire others to express themselves through their own art.

What are the next steps for you artistically and creativity in 2022?
I hope to widen my audience through engaging on social media and performing in different places. Growing my social media platform at @itsme_music_ giving will give me a place to share and document my work. Also, for 2022 I want to carry on writing more songs and digitally forming them experimenting with my music style. I am keen to learn more instruments such as the guitar and drums as I want to push myself artistically.

What are your longer term aims, for example for your future studies or work?
For the future, I would love music to be my job. The idea of working with my passion for music every day is something I would like to do. Performing on stage and people enjoying listening to my songs is my goal. After my GSCEs I am hoping to go to a music college so I can expand my musician skills to reach my future goal to be a singer-songwriter. Also, when I am there I could meet other people in the industry who could help and collaborate with my song writing. Being surrounded with people who share the same passion for music is something I would love.

Have you got any advice for other young people working towards an Arts Award?
Do what you love doing and do not let other people stop you from reaching your goals. Be your own artist and have confidence in what you are doing. Make this Arts Award something that you are proud of and represents you as an artist.

Is there anything creative you’re currently working on you’d like to tell us about?
Soon I am going to a studio to record some of my tracks. In the future I would love to have an album to share.
