Cultural Comforts: July 2021

As restrictions lift and more in-person events start to happen, don’t forget to take care of yourself and find time to relax. Like always, I’ve got some chilled recommendations for you.

You can find last month's recommendations here.

Yuri On Ice

If the Olympics has gotten you in the mood for watching sport you’ve never even heard of before, this is the perfect watch for you. Yuri On Ice is a sports anime, and the perfect anime to begin with if you’ve never seen one before. Staying with the theme of the Olympics, ‘anime’ is the Japanese word for animation and also describes the genre of Japanese animation. This miniseries revolves around the relationship between Japanese figure skater Yuri Katsuki and his idol, Russian figure-skating champion Victor Nikiforov. It’s easy to follow, super engaging and most importantly, a perfect comfort watch. Yuri On Ice can be rented on Amazon Prime.

Paddington 1 + 2

In my head, the Paddington movies can only be compared to a cup of tea after a challenging day. It’s cute and charming, with the slapstick family comedy that only British movies can pull off. There’s honestly something genius about the writing of Paddington 2; maybe it’s something to do with writer Simon Farnarby, who’s one of the Horrible History troupe. The way Paddington sees both London and the wider world is a beautiful reflection on the things we should be grateful for. As of May 2021, Paddington was also considered to be the top-rated film of all time on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with a whopping 100-percent score. If I’m in need of a pick me up, this is definitely what I’d turn to.

PinkPantheress

TikTok sensation PinkPantheress is only 20 years old and already creating some of the most angelic electronic music. Using samples, the British artist recycles 90s music into something entirely new. She calls this genre ‘new nostalgia’ and it certainly has a nostalgic feel to it. The drum and bass elements in her song, crisp British accent and silky sweet vocals are what make hits like Break It Off so easy to listen to.
