Hello, I'm Dom Malin, an indie folk and alternative rock singer-songwriter. I've been immersed in music for about three years now, but it's been a passion of mine since my teenage years. My music serves as a vessel to explore and express the complexities of life, delving deep into emotions and experiences that resonate with both myself and my listeners.
Tell us about your new album, ‘Hurricane.’
'Hurricane' is my latest musical endeavour, a single that delves into the tumultuous journey of navigating life's storms. Through a blend of indie folk and alternative rock sounds, I explore themes of resilience, introspection, and the raw beauty found within chaos.
What’s great about your job as a musician?
The most rewarding aspect of being a musician is the ability to connect with people on a deeply emotional level through my music.
Whether it's through live performances or recorded tracks, there's a profound sense of fulfilment in knowing that my songs resonate with others and perhaps even help them through their own struggles. Additionally, the creative freedom that comes with being an independent musician allows me to fully express myself without constraints, which is incredibly liberating.
What are the most challenging parts?
One of the biggest challenges I face as an independent musician is finding a balance between the creative process and the practical aspects of managing my career. From financing projects to scheduling performances and promoting my music, there's a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into maintaining a successful music career. It can be daunting at times, but ultimately, it's all part of the journey.
What are the highlights of your career to date?
One of the highlights of my career has been opening for Dermot Kennedy and Paris Paloma. It was a significant milestone for me as an artist, culminating years of hard work and dedication to my craft.
Additionally, being able to tour across Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and locally in the UK has been an incredible experience, allowing me to connect with audiences from different cultures and backgrounds.
What was your career path into this job? Have you also worked outside the arts?
My journey into music has been a winding road filled with twists and turns. While I've been passionate about music since my teenage years, I initially pursued other career paths outside of the arts. However, my love for music eventually led me back to my true calling, and I decided to pursue it full-time about three years ago. Since then, I've been dedicated to honing my craft and sharing my music with the world.
Can you describe your biggest challenge so far in your career? How did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges I've faced in my career is finding the financial resources to support my projects and endeavours. Whether it's funding studio time, producing music videos, or covering travel expenses for tours, the costs can quickly add up. To overcome this challenge, I've had to get creative with fundraising methods such as crowdfunding campaigns and seeking sponsorship opportunities. It's been a learning process, but it's taught me resilience and resourcefulness along the way.
Have you noticed any changes in the industry? If so, what?
Absolutely, the music industry is constantly evolving, especially in the age of digital streaming and social media. One notable change I've observed is the increasing prominence of independent artists and the democratisation of music distribution. With platforms like Spotify and Bandcamp, artists have more opportunities than ever to reach audiences directly and bypass traditional gatekeepers. However, this shift also brings its own set of challenges, such as navigating algorithms and standing out in a saturated market.
You’ve been granted the ability to send a message to 16-year-old you. What do you say?
To my 16-year-old self, I would say: "Embrace your passion for music wholeheartedly and trust in your creative instincts. The journey ahead may be filled with challenges and uncertainties, but never lose sight of your dreams. Stay true to yourself, persevere through the obstacles, and remember that your voice has the power to inspire and move others. You're capable of achieving great things, so never stop believing in the magic of your music."
Do you have any advice for young people interested in doing your kind of job?
My advice for aspiring musicians is to stay true to your authentic voice and never be afraid to share your unique perspective. Embrace the process of growth and self-discovery, and don't be discouraged by setbacks or criticism along the way.
Surround yourself with a supportive community of fellow artists and mentors who can offer guidance and encouragement. And most importantly, always remember the passion and love for music that initially inspired you to pursue this path. It's a journey filled with highs and lows, but the fulfilment of creating and sharing music that resonates with others is truly incomparable.
