#HelloYellow: Poem, A Note to the Nightbird

Hello.

This is my first post. I just signed up to do my Arts Award Gold, and the induction today inspired me so much I couldn't resist the opportunity to delve straight in with this. It's in response to the #HelloYellow campaign for World Mental Health Day. I'd like to think of it as a message to myself.

#HelloYellow: Poem, A Note to the Nightbird
Before the dawn my eyes were cast down,
The tide was only just withdrawing and my mind
Over-wrought with fretting
Haunted by speculation over the future and the past
Subsided.
#
I lay there quietly
All was clear on the eastern front.
I turned to greet it, and smiling, I closed my eyes.
I shut myself off, just for a while
And as I woke the sun was up
But I kept looking back
And longing for morning,
But it never came.
#
I never saw
The yellow gleam of day
Just the black inside my eyelids
And it was there I wanted to stay.
#
I willed myself to rise above
These instincts
In the web I had created for myself
Of spinning thoughts
Endless narratives
The separation of myself
From the point in the middle
That is me.
#
Me.
#
The sun set, and I,
A creature of the night, took
To my writing desk and spilled
My blood onto the page.
#
Red.
It was a start
#
I worked till I was weary
Carving my pen into the page
And then I saw
The sun
Emanating with its invasive light
And I slammed my book shut
For fear it would burn
And retired.
#
It was a start.
#
And as I stared at my chamber door
The mist drew in.
I closed my eyes
And dreamt of the raven, knocking
At my chamber door
To remind me
Of the yellow dawn.
#
He said
Never give up,
And I smiled.
I turned to face that yellow dawn
And closed my eyes
In remembrance of myself.
#
I'd missed the yellow dawn.
