Should it not be the case that to be considered art, a work should provoke a feeling of joy or happiness in whomever is consuming it? Could one go further to suggest that this feeling should be sufficient for them to justify spending their own money to own or at least view said art.
Hirst enjoyed considerable commercial success with much of his art being fairly uncontentious. I wonder how many of his controversial items sold to private collectors? Likewise, Banksy works now sell for considerable sums although much of his earlier, attention grabbing pieces have now probably been painted over.
Simply pushing boundaries cannot be considered the basis of good art. Art should be provocative and challenge norms but simply being controversial is not the same as being artistic.
narcissistic headline grabbing is only fit for ill informed comments on social media.
