Silver Arts Award Exhibition/Show Review

As a part of my Arts Award, I attended a dance show. The show was called NewVolutions; the performers were BA (hons) dance students from the University of Lincoln.

Silver Arts Award Exhibition/Show Review

What was the title of the exhibition/show?

The show was called New Volutions.

Why did you choose to attend this exhibition/show?

I chose to attend this event, so I could see other performers tell stories through contemporary dance.

Who were the artists and what do they create?

The artists performing were BA Hons Dance students, from Lincoln School of Fine & Performing Arts.

What did you see?

While I was there, I saw multiple contemporary dance performances, where the performers used movement and music to tell stories. Some of which were amazing and some I personally didn’t think properly got the stories across. My favourite was a performance by 5 boys, the majority of the performance was performed without music, that is what I thought was so good about it, they told the story without the help of music. The story was about togetherness and trust, to get this across they held hands and fell into eachothers arms, along with strong, interlinking movements. They also added humour into the performance, one of the ways they did this was by standing as if they had finished and were waiting for the lights to off. When it didn’t, the changed position and again a few time before dancing some more.

What were your first impressions

I thought about what I would be able to use from the show to help me improve. I also thought about what mistakes they made and how I will be able to ensure I won’t make the same mistakes myself.

Did you find anything particularly interesting to your personally?

One of the dances really captivated me, I didn’t want to stop watching because they were telling the story without the use of music.

What did you learn which will help you to achieve your challenge?

I learnt that I need to use my face to help express feelings and emotion. As well as making every movement fit in with the story I am trying to portray.

Did you enjoy the experience overall? Why?

I enjoyed the experience because I got to see how others tell stories and now I can do my best to ensure I don’t make the same mistakes some of the dancers made. As well as using what they did well to help me improve.
