On Wednesday 27th February 2019 we went to a gallery in Sutton called Direct Art Action UK. It is an art gallery that exhibits college and university student’s work and also local artists’ work including our old art teacher’s work. We looked at many art and photography pieces and took pictures of them. We then chose two pieces of art both from different artists (John Tedstone and Fran Vere) and we did an analysis on each art piece. After that, we interviewed an artist curator and noted down his answers.  For example some of the questions were: what does this art make you feel? , how did you start your career? Etc. we then talked to a college student about a piece of art her and her fellow peers have worked on and wrote down her answers. 

They were many forms of art in the gallery such as: digital photography, sculptures, paintings, architecture, political interactive art, drawings, ceramic and print making. I have not been to an art gallery before and I have not interviewed an artist or analysed a piece of art, so doing this was very interesting and new. Some of the art work was very unique. For example some of the 3D art was very different and also some of the themes of the art pieces for example, the art work series from John Tedstone was a dark Disney theme which was really unique and intriguing. I like the fact he used childhood characters to portray a dark, morbid theme. Out of all the art pieces, I think John Tedstone series of paintings were interesting as they were of Disney characters and remind me of my childhood. But also it has a connection with society and the corrupt society so it had a fun side with a serious aspect.

I also enjoyed the range of different art forms and ideas and look of the art and I liked how none of them looked the same or had the same vibe or feel. On the other hand, the art work I didn’t like was the carpet on the wall series as I found it very random and to me it wasn’t very creative. And also some of the mannequin art work as it looked very strange and made me feel uncomfortable.

I have learnt that there is a lot more to art than I originally thought and especially the exhibition part as you need to rent and organise very precisely and efficiently. I also learnt that most artists don’t finish their final artwork with the image they initially started with and they add and change their idea as the go along and that it takes a lot of thought and preparation to make an art piece and it also takes a lot of time and patience. I have also taken away that its ok to get negative feedback or critiques on your art work as it will not be everyone’s type of art and some might not find it engaging. That also if you want to take an art course, it’s better to take a foundation level as it is more efficient before you do a degree as you can try a little bit of everything before you choose your pathway
