The Freedom to Move is a devised performance created by Katie Staples performed on Thursday 17th May in Studio One at the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre.
This piece combines an autobiographical script and physical theatre that explores the topic of disability. Katie, who is a wheelchair user created a script that was humorous and marries audio described questions that she has been asked by members of the public. Some questions were pretty silly! The timing of the audio description and the subtitled answers in which Katie gave to the audience was well timed. The performance was subtitled at all times which made the performance accessible to hearing impaired audience members. Katie used sign language throughout the performance and incorporated a martial arts sword section to the show which was pretty cool! For the second half of the performance, Katie incorporated the Wheelchair (who is named Wallace) using physical theatre including balancing the wheelchair on her feet as the wheels spun, which looked stunning in the studio lighting. The music that was used throughout this section worked well with the movement and the performance was very moving.
The performance was only 12 minutes long however, I believe Katie could expand the piece and could potentially perform the solo show at theatre festivals. The piece was very moving and has a strong moral message to everyone. Regardless of your ability, you can achieve anything you want to. Even if society labels you differently. Prove them wrong! The script was well written and had a strong element of tickle and punch technique which was received well by the audience.
I am looking forward to seeing more of Katie's work in the future.
