One thing I’ve always hated is when journalists describe Bishop’s Castle as a quiet little town nestled in the Shropshire hills. Bishop’s Castle may be a little town, but I object to the idea that it’s some quiet town where nothing much happens. If you think Bishop’s Castle is quiet, then you’re simply not looking hard enough.
Last Saturday at The Six Bells "The Endings" played over two hours followed by at least three encores. The vibrant orange pub is a great music venue with the stage and seating area out in the beer garden of the pub. Rather than allowing the space to go unused the area has plenty of seating and tables with upcycled seating and a stage with a small, concreted area which works out perfectly for dancing. The beautiful stage is decked out in fairy lights, strings of leaves, signposting and even a little chandelier. The stage leaves plenty of room for dancing and the layering of the flooring works so that everyone is able to see and enjoy a pint in the sun. The background is also interesting with a wonky checkerboard pattern coloured in pastels.
The delicate staging contrasts the energy and music in the best way.
The Endings are a five membered band, made up of Paul, Verna, Harry, Rob, and Kev. The range of sound from this band is incredible using vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, drums, fiddle, whistle, mandolin, and bazouki. The energy which they sustained throughout the gig seemed effortless despite everything they must have put into it. The vibrant energy of the folk music and the welcoming nature of the band had people of all ages on their feet and dancing. The usual suspects for a bit of a dance found themselves joined by footballers and children. Plenty of people you’d usually expect to stay seated were energized by the lively music. One notable song is 7 Gallons of Pale from their album Completely Pickled. The song began with no one knowing the words, by the final chorus the entire beer garden was singing and clapping along. You can expect to see “The Endings” at Farmers Phil’s Festival in the summer. “The Endings” are definitely worth seeing so don’t miss out!
