Star Wars Day Review

May the fourth be with you!

The date I went to the Star Wars day is obvious – May the 4th of course! It was at the Nerdy café in Shrewsbury, and they held events throughout the day to celebrate Star Wars day.  The atmosphere was friendly and Star Wars music was being played on a loop in the background, it was really enjoyable. I sawa BB-8 droid which looked like a rover toy.  The costumes were all great, really realistic and I liked seeing the Mandalorian, Calcestis and Ahsoka Tano.

There were lots of people playing Star Wars themed and tactical board games, they also had 3D printed light sabres, helmets and battle armour. Each section of a lightsabre took about two days to print, so 10 days in total! The lightsabre I saw was printed in sections and then assembled in a modular. One of the costumes worn, they had learnt leather working so they could make the custom harness to hold the Droid on their back.   The droid was white and red, it was very well made and looked brilliant on Calcestis’ back – it brought his costume to life!

Whilst I was there, I also met the manager, Katie, who has worked at Nerdy for 2 years and was really friendly. I interviewed her and she mentioned they just want to offer a safe place for everyone which is in their motto, for everyone to play fully inclusive, we allow anyone and everyone in - we just want a place where you can come and be yourself.

The logo for Nerdy was designed but the original owner, it's Cthulhu with glasses, Nerdy ‘Cthulhu’ (a comic book sea creature’). Nerdy are open to ideas for all events, they even have a speed dating event coming soon and we do cabarets, LGBT events, board game socials and Dungeons & Dragons nights.

I also got to interview ‘Calcestis’, who is from the Jedi survive and Jedi fallen order video games. ‘Calcestis’ has been a huge Star Wars fan for at least 30 years as their dad was a big Star Wars fan and they remember getting the phantom menace on VHS when it came out. ‘Calcestis’ remembers organising a cinema trip to go and watch revenge of the Sith when in sixth form too and obviously their favourite Star Wars quote is ‘May the 4th be with you’ – it’s a classic!

The food on offer was good and was all Star Wars themed like Blue Milk, a Stormtrooper cappuccino and Wookie Cookies which looked amazing, I even got to make my own burger!

The only things that could have improved the day is to have a bit more decoration around the café, but overall, I liked Nerdy, I will definitely return and highly recommend to others to pop down sometime.
