We went to the Bristol Hippodrome to watch the new Diversity Show – Supernova. Diversity are a British street dance group with dancers from all backgrounds made famous by winning Britain’s Got Talent in 2009.

The story was about a pop star who is about to lose his career and ends up in a car crash. He battles his good and bad thoughts and memories to try and escape his coma. The story is told through acrobatic dances and narration from a rapper, as well as using big screens and visual effects.

One scene used water to rain on the stage as the dancers did flips and tricks from the different levels of the stage. The rain made the scene more dramatic and exciting, adding to the mood as the tricks seemed more dangerous and risky. Bright lights gave the effect of lightening which brought the storm to life.

The dancers used parts of a real car as props to create the illusion of a car in front of the screen. This showed a moving city scene that made it feel like the car was speeding. When it crashed the dancers moved in all directions to show the energy and effect of the crash – this was very effective and was quite shocking. 

The dancers could dance behind and interact with the two big screens on the stage. The dance moves matched the effects shown on the screen precisely; a jump from a dancer would be timed with a visual effect on screen like an explosion or shockwave. This helped draw your attention and made the moves seem even bigger and more impressive.

The screens were also used to show videos and flashbacks to help tell the story.

I did not know what to expect before the show but the music, lights and dancing made you feel like you were a part of the story. It was amazing! It didn’t feel like 2 hours and I would definitely want to see it or another of their shows again. After the show we stayed and were able to meet some of the dancers and pose for photos with them.
